Beachaven Winery

Not many people would say that Tennessee and wine go hand in hand, but Clarksville residents and the folks at Beachaven Winery know better.

I had the opportunity to chat with Louisa Cooke, one of the original founders; this local business has quite the back story.

In the 1940’s, Judge William O. Beach and his wife visited France and absolutely fell in love with the wine. They came back home to Clarksville and Judge Beach began making wine in his basement with the help of his young daughter Louisa, whose job was to hammer the corks into the bottles. As an adult, Louisa married Ed Cooke, a man who shared the Beach’s love of wine and wine making. The trio took their award winning wines and, in 1986, opened one of the first licensed commercial wineries in Tennessee and thus Beachaven Winery was born. They are still winning awards for their tasty wines to this day.

Beachaven doesn’t just produce some of the best wines around, they also host a bi-monthly Jazz on the Lawn. The word “jazz” is actually used quite loosely considering the bands range from classic rock and country to blues and R&B. Bring your kids and a picnic and get there early to enjoy great wine and great music. Did I mention it’s free admission? And free parking? It just doesn’t get any better than that!

If you’re looking for something a little more intimate and less crowded, DJ on the Dock is happening every other Thursday, with the next one coming up on July 25.

Beachaven is a winery, but its not just for the grown-ups. All of the events and tours are family friendly. Louisa says she believes kids should be able to witness safe and responsible drinking, and I agree. Plus, there’s plenty of history to learn if you take a tour or visit Beachaven during the Welcome Home Veterans Event. From September 19th through the 22nd, you can admire the Field of Honor-Tribute to Veterans and the American Veterans Traveling Tribute Wall.

Now for the fun part, the wine! I made sure to sample a few wines (for research purposes, obviously). The first wine Louisa poured for me is their newest addition to the menu, a Moscato. Sweet and fruity, this one is perfect for summer nights. The second wine I tasted is Beachaven’s best seller, Golden Rose. This one is made from Concord grapes and in my opinion is not too sweet, not too dry. It’s perfectly in the Goldilocks zone and is a best seller for good reason. The third and final wine I tasted is Louisa’s favorite, Classic White, a dry wine made from Pinot Grigio grapes. Delicious and perfect for those who are used to sweeter wines but want to venture to the dry side of the menu. I will absolutely be back for full bottles and more tastings!

If you love wine, I highly recommend you visit Beachaven, take a tour, taste a few award winning wines, buy a bottle or two, and stay for a show on Thursday or Saturday evening. Beachaven Winery is a unique experience that can only be found in Clarksville, Tennessee!
