Mugsy’s Coffee Co

In this week’s Clarksville Small Business Spotlight, I’m featuring Mugsy’s Coffee Co. A family and veteran owned coffee shop with two locations in Clarksville. The first and oldest location is perfectly situated directly across the street from the entrance to Fort Campbell and their newest location is on Dunlop Lane amidst medical offices, drugstores, and Tennova Hospital.

I knew that I wanted to feature Mugsy’s early on in this blog because of the way the owners, Ken and Tina Poindexter, run their business. Scrolling through their Instagram is like scrolling through a friend’s page. Memes, Memorial and Veteran’s day posts, photos of the baristas at work, and videos of Ken himself announcing holiday store hours. Mugsy’s social media presence is more about connecting with their customers and less about selling you a product.

This let’s-be-friends approach carries on into the actual shops. Walking in to Mugsy’s feels like going home. You are greeted with welcoming smiles, a friendly atmosphere, and a couple of worn leather chairs that are just as comfortable as they look.

Mugsy’s hand drawn chalkboard menu is a cross between typical coffee shop fare and Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Of course at Mugsy’s you can order drinks like an Americano, cappuccino, or latte. But if you’re in the mood for something a little more adventurous, I suggest you try one of their many signature drinks like the German Chocolate Frappe, Mama’s Mocha, or the 66 Nash with coconut and almond (I’ll definitely be back for that one). If you’re stopping by for breakfast or lunch, check out the Salsa Sunrise or the Popeye’s Delight.

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with the owner of Mugsy’s, Ken Poindexter. Ken retired after thirty six years of military service in the Marine Corps and the Army respectively. After retirement, the opportunity to own and operate Mugsy’s just sort of fell into their laps. Ken and Tina bought the shop from a friend in 2008 and the rest is history.

At some point in the conversation, I asked Ken what sets Mugsy’s apart from the abundance of coffee shops in Clarksville and his answer was unexpected but so fitting. He said that he wants Mugsy’s to be an extension of his and Tina’s living room. They want their guests to feel safe and welcome as if they’re visiting a friend’s house.

I believe that Mugsy’s Coffee Co is a good metaphor for Clarksville. Maybe not the fanciest or most well known, but definitely warm and welcoming and friendly. Now isn’t that exactly what you want in a coffee shop?
